The National Gallery of Indonesia houses, maintains, and manages the collection of modern and contemporary art within the Ministry of Culture, sourced from three work units: the Secretariat of the Directorate General of Culture (National Art House Project), the Directorate of Arts (formerly the Arts Section, Djawatan Budaya), and the National Museum. In 1998, the entire collection was transferred to the newly established GNI (National National Art Gallery). A year later, GNI officially began operations and continued the tradition of acquiring works of art through purchases and donations. Currently, the GNI collection has reached 1,876 works consisting of two-dimensional works, three-dimensional works, installations, and media art.
